Counselling for Children,
Adolescents and Families
My Services
Parent Information Session/ Initial Consult
Before I begin work with your child, I will meet with you to gather information relating to your child’s history, both physical and emotional. Often in the telling of your child’s story details will emerge that might shed light on some of your child’s current difficulties. This is a chance for you to paint a picture of your child within the family context. This session also allows you the opportunity to share your concerns, hopes and dreams for your child.
I create a therapeutic space that is tailored to the individual needs of each young person, guided by the child’s interests and needs. I place a lot of emphasis on the process of rapport building. To do this I employ a range of techniques such as art and play therapy. I believe in transparency, and I engage in psycho-education, normalising and de-mystifying the process that might be contributing to the child’s discomfort. Together we look for ways to challenge and change negative thought patterns and behaviours.
Child/Adolescent Counselling Session
Family Session
These sessions allow the family a non-judgemental safe space to share their experience. Through a process of active listening each member has the chance to explore and express their views. Together we identify common barriers and set goals based upon a shared vision for a more positive future. The family learns to draw upon their individual and collective strengths to facilitate change.
Parent Coaching
I offer parents 1 hour sessions, suggesting a minimum of four. During these, we unpack the family dynamics that are contributing to the household’s stress and that might be driving challenging behaviours. My philosophy is to empower parents with tools and strategies to make family life more harmonious. Parents sometimes feel as if they are not doing a good enough job, but in my experience, they are doing a great job. Parenting can feel challenging but it is often small changes that reap large rewards. I work from a strengths-based approach acknowledging and normalising the everyday experience of parenting, giving parents their confidence back.
My name is Laura. I live with my husband, two children and three pets. When I am not in my counselling room, you will usually find me engaged in some sort of outdoor or creative activity. I love the beach, walking, cooking and spending time in my garden.
As your counsellor, I aim to guide and equip you with positive coping skills so that you can get on with the business of living.
To do this work I employ a range of activities such as talking, role-playing, art making, sand tray work as well as mindfulness techniques.
I believe in working collaboratively with families, supporting parents so that they can better support their children.
If you or your loved ones are feeling overwhelmed, come and have a chat and let’s see how together we can uncover your strengths so that you can become the best version of yourself!
